We know that care leavers achieve remarkable things… however these are some of the barriers and issues many have to overcome.
Only 1% of the population get taken into care as a child……yet due to a range of different influencers including; lack of support networks, direction, low expectations and aspirations, stigma amongst other things these statistics seem to be lying in wait
Care Leavers are 5 times more likely to commit suicide and suffer from poor mental health
40% of care leavers experience homelessness in the first 6 months of leaving care
1/3 of the prison population have experienced care as a child.
1 in 7 young people leaving care at 18 are pregnant or already parents
Just 11% of children in care achieve 5 good GCSE’s compared to the national average of 60%
Only 6% of care leavers go to university compared to 38% of all young people
What’s happening locally?
There are approximately 300 care leavers living in Stockport who may benefit from the projects we are delivering.
Pure Innovations have worked with young people in care and care leavers for over 10 years, we set up In-Sight to meet some of the unmet need that is seen on a national and local level
Some of the care leavers we work with report feeling lonely, isolated and unsupported, they are facing extreme financial difficulties, suffering with poor mental health, experiencing difficulties with accommodation and a general feeling of being alone in facing these huge challenges in life.
